CIEMAT

CIEMAT (Center for Energy, Environmental and Technological research) is a public research body assigned to the Ministry of Science and Innovation under the General Secretariat for Research, focusing on energy and environment and the technologies related to them. It has offices in several different regions of Spain, and its activity is structured around projects which form a bridge between R&D&I and social interest goals.

It collaborates with other R&D&I institutions, universities and business in the sector to transfer the knowledge and technology that it has generated, supporting and encouraging innovation and changing the economic model.

The CIEMAT took over from the old Junta de Energía Nuclear (JEN), which since 1951 had led research in nuclear fission energy production and control in Spain. In the decade of the eighties, it opened to new energy alternatives and to applied study of the environmental impact of energy. At present, the main lines of action are the study, development, promotion and optimisation of various sources as: renewable energies, nuclear fusion, nuclear fission and fossil fuels; the study of their impact on the environment, development of new technologies; not forgetting areas of basic research such as high-energy physics and molecular and cellular biology.

Its R&D&I activity is framed in national and international settings, and is complemented by activities such as education, technology transfer, rendering technical services, advising to the administrations and representation of Spain in a diversity of international forums.

Its mission is to contribute to sustainable development of the country and to the quality of life of its citizens through the generation and application of scientific and technological knowledge. Its goal is to maintain its position as a centre of excellence in energy, environment and technology and in basic research.

Its team of 1,328 people is technologically and geographically diversified. In addition to its central offices in Madrid, it has the Plataforma Solar de Almería (PSA) in Andalucía, a scientific installation of international renown in solar technologies, in Soria, the Centro de Desarrollo de Energías Renovables (CEDER) and the Centro Internacional de Estudios de Derecho Ambiental (CIEDA), in Trujillo (Extremadura) the Centro Extremeño de Tecnologías Avanzadas (CETA), and in Barcelona the Centro de Investigación Socio-Técnica (CISOT).

CEDER (CIEMAT)

CEDER (Centre for the Development of Renewable Energy Sources) is located a few kilometres from Soria, was born in the eighties as a national centre for research, development and promotion of renewable energy sources dependent on the CIEMAT and currently attached to the Department of Energy of this Public Research Organisation. It is considered as pioneer centre in Spain in the field of energy use of biomass, as well as being national and European reference in small wind energy.

Part of the general archive of CIEMAT can be found on CEDER's facilities.

Nowadays CEDER has 51 staff of which 27 form a group composed of professional experts in management and administration, documentation, laboratory techniques, mechanical, electrics, electronics, IT and telecommunications, etc, isrelated to the objective of making the Centre and facilities associated with research projects operational. The remaining 24 are associated with the R+D+i activities (research, development and innovation; a multidisciplinary team of researchers and skilled technicians in several branches of engineering and sciences (industrial, forestry, telecommunications, agronomy, chemistry, biology, etc.) composes this group.

There also must be added the external support services for surveillance and cleaning (7 workers), and another service for operation and maintenance of pilot plants (10 workers).

In the framework of the DRY4GAS Project, CEDER-CIEMAT will be in charge of performing test runs in its solar drying and gasification pilot plants. After that, from the results obtained in the pilot phase, CIEMAT will perform the design, construction and operation of the solar drying and gasification prototypes that will be installed in the WWTP located in San Javier (Murcia). Moreover, CIEMAT will measure the gas quality and produced emissions. Finally, CIEMAT will be responsible of the coordination of the project.

CEBAS-CSIC

CEBAS is a research institute that belongs to the Spanish Research Council (CSIC) and is located in Murcia, Spain.

The aim of CEBAS-CSIS is to generate through investigation necessary knowledge which make possible the development of strategies to achieve the sustainability of the scant resources which exist / existing in semiarid areas, through their correct management and making possible the development of a quality agriculture and obtaining healthy and safe vegetable food.

The increase of the generated knowledge will make possible to contribute to taking decisions regarding the necessary rules to implement actions and policies in this regard. Besides, the research carried out will help to face very important problems such as water scarcity, create a better environment (reducing the greenhouse effect, preserving the soil, the vegetation and the organic matter). A sustainable agriculture will be guaranteed through the production of quality and healthy food and will contribute to the socioeconomic and environmental progress of future generations.

The singularity of CEBAS is that it is a multidisciplinary centre with three different areas of investigation (Agricultural Sciences, Food Science and Technology and Natural Resources), each of which operates separately but within a common context (CEBAS). Doing research work in these three areas and in a geographical area with scant resources, such as the Region de Murcia, generates a bank of knowledge that must be used. That is why the Vision of the centre is “to continue being a regional and national reference and to become an international reference regarding the development of high quality agriculture, and the development of healthy and safe vegetable foods in areas of scant resources, respecting, particularly, the conservation of soil and water.”

Within DRY4GAS, CEBAS-CSIC will develop agronomical experiences to evaluate the responses of soil fertility and quality, and crop to the addition of sludges and ashes resulting from the proposed gasification process.

RANK

RANK® is the registered brand of EXPANDER TECH, S.L, a technology-based Spin Off that has the Universitat Jaume I de Castellón as a shareholder. The company was born at 2010 as a consequence of various collaborations for the implementation of energy efficiency measures in the industrial sector.

During the course of these works it was observed that the use of low temperature residual heat was a field with a great potential still unexploited. For this reason, an important part of its activity since its founding has involved the research and development of its own technologies that allow the manufacture and distribution of microgeneration pieces of equipment through Organic Rankine Cycles (ORC) in order to generate electricity from low temperature heat sources. These products have been validated in several applications and are currently in the commercialization phase. Moreover, it has been found that, once the products have been launched on the market, the main demand for equipment has come from biomass cogeneration applications and renewable energy systems.

In addition, the company has developed High Temperature Heat Pumps(HTHP) and Cryo-ORC for regasification.

The company holds a position of technological leadership in this area that has allowed it to participate in several European projects. Specifically, ExpanderTech, S.L. participates in the collaborative projects:

  • BRICKER call FP-2013-NMP-ENV-EeB, project number 609071 “Total Renovation Strategies for Energy Reduction in Public Building Stock (BRICKER), coordinated by Acciona Infraestructuras, S.A.
  • LIFE12 ENV/ES/000787 entitled “A2 Supermarket retrofit for zero energy consumption”, project acronym: LIFEZEROSTORE. The project is coordinated by EROSKI S COOP and executed by a consortium of four members.
  • SEAL OF EXCELENCE FROM EUROPEAN COMMISSION H2020 PROJECT number 777954 RANKZEROCARB. Zero carbon Energy: A new generation of efficient micro CHP and High Temperature Heat Pumps activated with waste and renewable sources.

In addition to these projects, RANK ® has participated in more than 10 national and regional programs such as "Retos Colaboración, Torres Quevedo, etc."

The research character of the project has been endorsed by the National Agency for Evaluation and Prospective (ANEP), giving the highest score, so it has been considered for all purposes as a strategic research. Also EU has certificate the company as INNOVATIVE SME.
From 2016 RANK® is selling its technology all around the world, now there are 20 machines running all over Europe.

Within the DRY4GAS project, RANK will be responsible of supplying the technology for the production of electricity: a organic Rankine cycle system (ORC). In this way, electricity will be produced from the thermal energy obtained from the combustion of the gasification gas. The prototype that will be installed in the San Javier WWTP (Murcia) will also produce heat for drying the sewage sludge.
